The Nikon D5000 offers you complete manual control over you shots, but if you are just starting out there are numerous modes which you can select from depending on the conditions and environment that you are in. This means that you can use this camera as a point and shoot to start off with and gradually move into the other modes like manual and aperture priority mode as you become more comfortable with camera. So you do really get the best of both worlds.
I bought this camera because I was very interested in doing landscape and urban photography and you just can’t do that with a point and shoot. There are many different settings which can be used and there are a numerous types of lenses that you can use, from wide angle to telephoto, macro and fisheye lenses. It all depends what subject you are shooting.
The Nikon D5000 also has the ability to shoot HD Video at 720P with a frame rate of 24FPS. So you cant get gorgeous High Definition video of all the things you get up to on your adventures. These videos will look great on your HDTV and your friends will be impressed.

Nikon D5000 – HD Video Depth of field test – 70 to 300mm tele-macro lens – D 5000
This is a quick Depth of Field video test of the Nikon D5000.I locked the exposure. I used a “Quantaray Tech-10″ 70 to 300mm tele-macro lens for this video. The aperture was fully opened. Compared to the Nikon D90, the video quality is much better on the D5000. I say this because there is considerably less wobbly (rolling shutter) effect. The D90 is just not useful for video, whereas the D5000 can very much be used for great video. Sound quality isn’t the greatest, but it gets the job done; provided that you’re not in an extremely loud environment. Although be careful when buying this camera, Nikon has put a recall out on this model, just go to the nikon website, and they have a page that will check your serial number for you to see if your camera falls under the recalls.
