Nikon Nikkormat FTN

Manufactured about 1967 by Nippon Kogaku K.K. of Tokyo, Japan (better known as Nikon). The Nikkormat series of cameras originated as a lower-priced alternative to the Nikon F cameras. It used the same lenses, but didn’t take some of the “professional” accessories like interchangeable finders, motors, etc. Per McKeown’s Guide, “many professionals, particularly photojournalist, preferred the Nikkormats because of their smaller size and lighter weight.” While it never reached the “status symbol” the Nikon F did, it was still a well made camera and known to be rugged and reliable. The FTN used the Nikon bayonet mount lenses and offered center-weighted TTL metering. It has a vertical travel, metal focal-plane shutter with speeds from 1 second to 1/1000 of a second and “bulb.” Speeds and and over/under exposure indicator are visible through the finder and the meter has a needle indicator visible near the rewind knob on top. It has a self timer, mirror lockup and depth-of-field preview button. There is no hot shoe—no shoe at all, for that matter—but it does have both “X” and “M” PC contacts on the left side of the body.
The example shown here has a 50mm f/2.0 Nikkor-H Auto lens. The lens has flat front element which was unique for it’s day. For all you Nikon buffs, it is technically a “non-AI” but this designation wasn’t added until the AI lenses were introduced in 1977…

Help me in the basics of the Nikon D40?
Question by : Help me in the basics of the Nikon D40?
i tend to forget the littlest things that a DSLR can offer, i barely got it over the summer and i really appreciate what the camera can offer to me and my family, espically when there loving the results. But i wanna do more with this camera, it would help to have a little basic cheat cheat when taking pictures in different surrondings. I understand DSLR has variations of setting, but having the basic ones would help me start off putting more effort by going in manaual and instead of automatic. i took photograhy in high school and rememberd all of that but it was film and mixing the two concept is confusing. i would love to take a photograhy course but in a couple of months ill be leaving for bootcamp for marine corps. so right now im just enjoying life wonders under the lens.

I normally don’t give this kind of answer but I will here. There is just too much to try to summarize. Just search in Yahoo, Google or whatever for NIKON D40 and you will find everything you want to know. I just searched and got hundreds of hits. Most are just rehash of the others but you can find everything from sales pitches to into manuals to detailed manual.

What is the best 70-300 lens for a nikon DX or FX body?
Question by L F: What is the best 70-300 lens for a nikon DX or FX body?
Right now I have a Nikon D60 and I will eventually upgrade to a D700? I want to purchase a 70-300 lens that will also work in the FX format cameras. I heard great reviews about the tamaron lenses. They are cheaper than Nikon and come with a six year warranty. If you are using a tamaron lens, please let me know your experience with it.

I don’t have a tamron lens (though I’ve used them satisfactorily with my 35mm Nikons) but I’d definitely recommend the Nikon 70-300mm VR. First of all, it has the internal autofocus motor required by your D60. Second, it has the great VR (vibration reduction) feature that allows you to capture images that might otherwise require a tripod. I found it extemely useful on my Nikon 18-200mm VR when I was traveling in China one summer.
If you buy the lens through an Authorized Nikon dealer, it comes with a 5-year warranty.
As for eventual upgrades, be aware of this. Every camera/lens maker had designed in future compatibility into their lenses. 3rd party lens makers have to backwards engineer their optics and will sometimes have to “rechip” their lenses to keep up with future models. By the time you upgrade, Nikon will have newer dslr models with new features. Every Nikon-made lens will be compatible. There’s no guarantee with Tokina, Tamron, Sigma, etc.
Here’s a couple of reviews of the Nikon 70-300mm VR.

And some comparisons between the Nikon and Tamron for you.

I think you’ll find the Nikon beats the Tamron on all counts.
